Located about halfway between Waco and Austin, Killeen is known as a military town. This is because its economy is largely dependent upon Fort Hood. There are some great attractions there as well.
The town is named after Frank P. Killeen, assistant general manager of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. In 1881, the railroad extended its tracks through what is now the town of Killeen. Killeen was a pretty small farm trade city until the 1940s. It was then that World War II changed everything. Thousands of workers and soldiers moved into the area with their families. Killeen grew into a military boomtown.
If you’re visiting Killeen, there are a few popular destinations. At Central Texas College, the Mayborn Planetarium and Science Theater has a full-dome display that allows visitors to view outer space. If you’re interested in culture and history, the Bell County Museum (just nearby in Belton, TX) has exhibitions that feature rare photography, costumes, artifacts, and other items.
The Cinergy Copperas Cove, just across Route 190 from the planetarium, offers a multitude of entertainment experiences. It combines a movie theater, amusement park, and dining area in one building. Eat dinner while movie watching, or play laser tag mini-golf. For more entertainment, the Vive Les Arts Theater produces several shows every year.
