Mazda is recalling 9,914 of its 2024 CX-90 Hybrid SUVs due to a potential issue with the forward collision warning system. This fault could cause the brakes to activate suddenly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem arises when the smart brake system (SBS) incorrectly detects objects in the vehicle’s path at low speeds between 10 and 15 mph. This can lead to unexpected braking and a higher risk of accidents.
The SBS may mistake reflections or large metal objects on the roadside as obstacles, prompting the vehicle to brake to avoid these perceived threats.
Although the brake lights will function normally, the sudden braking increases the likelihood of a crash.
Mazda will inform affected owners by mail and instruct them to take their CX-90 to a local dealership. The dealers will reprogram the vehicle control module (VCM) with updated software at no cost to the owners. Mazda expects this software update to solve the problem without requiring additional repairs.
Dealers were notified earlier in May, and owner notification letters are expected to be mailed before July 17. Owners who are concerned that their vehicle may be involved in the recall can also check the NHTSA recalls website for confirmation.
Mazda is taking these steps to ensure the safety and reliability of its vehicles, addressing the potential fault proactively to prevent any incidents related to the malfunctioning SBS.
