San Marcos, TX sits in between the two larger cities of Austin and San Antonio. It is about 30 miles southwest of Austin and about 50 miles northeast of San Antonio. Back in 2010, according to the census, San Marcos population was close to 45,000. By 2016, it was estimated to be over 60,000. San Marcos was named as the fastest-growing city in the US by the United States Census Bureau in both 2013 and 2014. Clearly, the city is still growing and expanding!
San Marcos also contains the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment. This is an educational center that preserves resources of Spring Lake – which is another great site of the city. In fact, there are several springs and lakes throughout San Marcos. These include The San Marcos and Blanco Rivers, Cottonwood Creek, Sink Creek, Purgatory Creek, and Willow Springs Creek. Each of these contains different trails or parks.
However, there are lots of commercial opportunities and activities as well. There are many outlet malls located in San Marcos, bringing in visitors and residents alike. In addition, San Marcos is home to Texas State University. The University has a 1903 Victorian Gothic-style Old Main building.
There are other historic areas in the city, as well. This includes the downtown Historic District, which contains the restored Hays County Courthouse from the early 1900s. Surrounding the courthouse, there are several restaurants, bars, shops, and music venues. Especially in terms of entertainment, there is a lot to do in San Marcos!
